Buddied tree planting. In addition to the carbon offset credits, we plant 4 trees per tonne of CO₂e offset. We are an official partner of Eden: People+Planet (formerly Eden Reforestation Projects), who plant trees to improve livelihoods.
Alongside our tree planting, we also commit to diverting £1 per tonne of CO₂e from every sale to support our free data, tools, and resources. Find out more: Circular Ecology's Scaling Carbon Reductions Initiative (SCRI).
About this Project
The Panama Forestry Programme is a Gold Standard carbon offset project which increases the environmental sustainability of degraded land. This is achieved with 50 tree species, including 20 native species and Teak. This transforms the land over time into mixed forests, improving carbon storage and habitat creation. Cattle ranching has degraded areas of land in Panama.
As a response, the Panama Reforestation Project plants mostly native tree species in these areas to generate sustainable timber production, cocoa production, and employment opportunities. A quarter of the area has been designated as a nature reserve with high biological value. The restoration of the area will maintain and increase the biodiversity of the animal and plant species over time.
The project aims to protect and restore the degraded ecosystems, generate sustainable timber practices, and protect biodiversity in the >13,000ha of project space. Additional environmental benefit has occurred as habitats for 15 threatened animal species on the Red List have been found in the project forest area, including the brown throated sloth.
Benefits of Forestry Carbon Credits
- First Gold Standard afforestation project worldwide
- Reforesting degraded pasture land
- 7.5 million trees planted
- >3.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions reduced
- A high conservation value forest
- Cocoa production
- Knowledge transfer and 150 jobs created for locals in sustainable forest management
- Increased social and economic welfare for local communities
- Habitats for 15 threatened Red List animal species
Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals
The biodiverse planting project in the Panama forests is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, often shortened to the UN SDGs:
- UN SDG 1 – No Poverty
- UN SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
- UN SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
- UN SDG 13 – Climate Action
- UN SDG 15 – Life on Land
