Circular Ecology Resources

Circular Ecology are happy to share our variety of free resources, from knowledge articles and guides, free carbon footprinting databases and tools. Please see the sections below to learn more.

Inventory of Carbon & Energy (ICE) Database

The Inventory of Carbon and Energy (also known as the ICE database) is an embodied carbon database for building materials which is available for free. Our founder, Dr Craig Jones, created the ICE database in his former role as a researcher at the University of Bath whilst working for Professor Geoff Hammond, at the Sustainable Energy Research Team (SERT).

In total, the ICE database has been downloaded by over 50,000 professionals from around the world and it appears in countless reports, journals, books, lectures, embodied energy and carbon footprint calculators, and more. It contains data for over 200 materials, broken down into over 30 main material categories.

Concrete Embodied Carbon Calculator

Concrete is one of the main contributors to the embodied carbon footprint of most buildings and infrastructure assets. Circular Ecology has created an embodied carbon calculator for concrete, as part of the free embodied carbon database for materials known as the ICE database.

The tool allows for the input of multiple custom concrete mixtures and outputs the estimated embodied carbon. There is an Excel-based and online version of the tool available. Please click the button below to find out more.

Free Organisational Carbon Footprinting Tool

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility, Circular Ecology are proud to offer a free Organisational Carbon Footprint Tool.

Designed to be used by businesses who are looking to begin their sustainability journey, this free tool offers organisations help with measuring their Scope 1 and 2 emissions in line with the GHG protocol.

The tool is excel-based, and is designed with ease-of-use in mind. It uses publicly available emissions factors and is intended to be updated yearly to allow for continued reporting of organisational emissions.

Scaling Carbon Reductions Initiative (SCRI)

Circular Ecology have launched the SCRI to to divert some of the income from our sales towards resources that facilitate carbon emission reductions around the world.

The fund’s objective is to influence carbon reductions on a large scale. The primary mechanism of this, is to develop and maintain free data, tools and resources. This will give people and organisations more knowledge and mechanisms to measure and manage the carbon emissions of their projects and activities.
