Buddied tree planting. In addition to the carbon offset credits, we plant 4 trees per tonne of CO₂e offset. We are an official partner of Eden: People+Planet (formerly Eden Reforestation Projects), who plant trees to improve livelihoods.
Alongside our tree planting, we also commit to diverting £1 per tonne of CO₂e from every sale to support our free data, tools, and resources. Find out more: Circular Ecology's Scaling Carbon Reductions Initiative (SCRI).
About this Project
The Clean Water and Rhino Conservation Project addresses two critical issues: providing access to clean water and conserving endangered rhinos. This Gold Standard Certified project ensures an exceptional level of environmental integrity and sustainable development benefits.
In Northern Uganda, communities have faced severe challenges due to the insurgency led by the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group. This conflict has displaced over 2 million people and destroyed vital infrastructure, including water, education, and health services.
Many rely on contaminated, unprotected water sources, leading to high rates of waterborne diseases. Those looking to purify the water often boil it over open fires, exposing families to dangerous air pollution and contributing to the climate crisis.
Traditionally, it’s women and children collecting the water and firewood needed, which takes a long time. This task limits children’s education and prevents adult women from engaging in income-generating activities or spending time with their families.
The project introduces a range of clean water solutions to address the urgent needs of the communities in Northern Uganda. Boreholes and hand pumps, often neglected due to lack of funding or knowledge, are restored and maintained to ensure continuous access to safe water. Through implementing sustainable water purification methods, the project eliminates the need for boiling water over open fires, significantly reducing household air pollution and conserving resources. This initiative has notably saved 9,293 tonnes of wood, which would otherwise be burned for water purification.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project brings substantial time savings, with nearly 208 hours saved per year per household, equivalent to 26 working days. This reduction in the time spent gathering firewood and water alleviates the burden on women and children, allowing them to focus on education and income-generating activities.
Benefits of this Project’s Carbon Credits
- Up to 208 hours per year saved, per household
- Almost 29 million litres of safe water provided to 12,300 people
- 9,293 tonnes of wood saved
- >10,500 tonnes of CO2 reduced per year
- Improved livelihoods for women and children – spending less time collecting firewood
- Improved health as inside cooking space no longer contains harmful emissions from burning wood on an open fire
- Supports one of the most successful rhino breeding programmes in Africa
