Whole Life Carbon Assessments of Buildings: What You Need to Know

A building’s Whole Life Carbon Assessment assesses the full life cycle impact of a building, which can include any building type, from a warehouse or factory to a house or block of flats. WLCA can also be used to assess construction and civil engineering projects (e.g., roads, rail, water, and energy infrastructure).

Dr Craig Jones (Managing Director) and Edwin Lowe (Delivery Manager) of Circular Ecology introduced us to Whole Life Carbon Assessments of buildings, including what these assessments typically consist of, why they’re important, and what current best practices are.

Key Topics Covered

  • What is embodied carbon, and what is operational carbon?
  • What is a Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA)?
  • What tools can be used to assist with whole life carbon assessments?
  • What data can product manufacturers and suppliers provide?
  • Which standards should you adhere to?
  • BREEAM Mat 01 LCA: How to obtain credits, and v7 changes
  • How the London Plan requires whole life carbon assessments
  • How whole life carbon assessment can help you achieve Net Zero Carbon Buildings
