Scope 3 Footprinting: How to Build & Improve Your Scope 3 Footprint Data

Spend based approaches are inherently limited. Prices are not a reliable proxy for carbon, results can be volatile year on year, and the outputs offer limited insight into where and how actual emissions can realistically be reduced. Improving Scope 3 data, therefore, should be based on a gradual replacement of spend based methods with a process based approach, following a structured, iterative journey towards better quality and more actionable data sources.

Delivered by Joe Rouse (Senior Consultant) and Jon Burrow (Head of Carbon Accounting), this session provided an overview of a typical Scope 3 footprint journey, what steps this entails, and how you can progress the maturity of your data and footprint.

Key Topics Covered

  • A practical overview of Scope 3 emissions, their importance, and how they relate to your organisation
  • An introduction to the Scope 3 data maturity model, outlining steps from initial spend based approaches to more detailed process based and supplier specific data
  • Guidance on the spend based methodology, including advantages, limitations, and where it fits in the data improvement journey
  • Practical advice and guidance on supplier engagement, including how to assess supplier maturity and what information to request, that is suited to your organisation
  • How to use performance indicators to track, monitor, and assess your data quality and Scope 3 footprint over time
