RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment 2nd edition is now in effect. Released in November 2023, the updated standard has been expanded to cover all buildings and infrastructure across the asset life cycle.
In full effect from 1 July 2024, RICS members must follow the standard’s requirements when completing a whole life carbon assessment. This includes recording any deviations from the standard, as part of the assessment.
Developed to provide continuity and reliability, while encouraging long-term thinking through reuse, recycling and redevelopment, the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment 2nd edition in the built environment marks a revolutionary change in carbon measurements practices.
Supported by the Department for Transport UK and Zero Waste Scotland, the standard was updated by RICS and an author group of decarbonisation experts following feedback from over 1,300 comments collected through a public consultation.
RICS dedicated hub provides helpful guides and resources for stakeholders. Two new guides were also launched in March, including “Whole Life Carbon Assessments – a guide for clients”.
