Gold Standard Carbon Offsets - African Biogas Digesters and Cookstoves

The Kenya Biogas Programme is a Gold Standard Certified carbon offsetting project which provides biodigesters to individual households.

Over 80% of rural households rely on wood or charcoal for fires in Kenya, which are unsustainable and expensive fuel sources. Wood and charcoal release CO2 into the atmosphere when burnt, which contributes to the enhanced warming effect of climate change.

The Biogas Programme offers an alternative fuel source, which reduces deforestation and enhances the quality of life for users in Kenya as the biogas is a smokeless fuel. Animal waste is used in the biodigester to generate biogas which can be burnt as fuel, and a slurry biproduct can be used as fertiliser after the gas has been used. Time and money are saved for users, especially women and children, as fuel does not have to be collected or bought. This time can then be spent on agriculture or educational activities, and the money saved can be used in a variety of ways. .

Benefits of Biogas and Biodigester Carbon Credits

  • 4.8 tCO2e saved per digester per year
  • Improved air quality in around 15,000 kitchens
  • >350,000 tonnes of CO2 saved
  • >100 full time jobs created, and part-time labour jobs
  • Reduced deforestation, saving >220,000 tonnes of wood
  • Improved livelihoods for women and children – spending less time collecting firewood and less time cooking
Improved health as inside cooking space no longer contains harmful PM2.5 emissions from fuel
  • Household expenses are reduced for fuels
    • Money saved can be used in a variety of ways such as improving farming resources, and purchasing goods

Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Kenya biodigesters project is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With benefits in 6 UN SDGs.

  • UN SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
  • UN SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being
  • UN SDG 5 – Gender Equality
  • UN SGD 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
  • UN SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • UN SDG 13 – Climate Action
UN SDG 2 Zero Hunger
UN SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being
UN SDG 5 Gender Equality
UN SDG 7 Affordable and clean energy
UN SDG 8 work and economic growth
UN SDG 13 Climate Action

Clean Cookstoves – Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard Credits

African Biogas Carbon Programme (ABC) Kenya credits are certified by Gold Standard. This carbon offset certification scheme ensures that the CO2 credits in the project are:

  • Verified
  • Robust
  • Transparent
  • Tracable

This ensures that high quality carbon credits are provided, and that real and measurable carbon reduction is taking place as a direct result of the project, which is essential for Net Zero Carbon and carbon neutral claims.

Where to Buy Carbon Offsets

Circular Ecology can provide carbon offsets to businesses, using carbon credits from Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard or Plan Vivo. We have carbon offset registry accounts for all three of those well respected offset certification schemes. For volumes over 500 tCO2e, please contact us at Circular Ecology.
